I first started started carving when I was 13 and finished my first 2 pieces when
I was 14, and it kind of went on from there. I started carving because that’s what
my dad did and I wanted to see if i could do it myself.
I mainly carve animals because I love animals ... all animals! I can't have them all as pets so I carve them. I prefer to turn out stylised pieces, which suggest the animal intended rather than representing it as an accurate form. The grain, the Spalting, and the colour of the wood all play a large part in the finished piece. My work also includes bowls, clocks, masks and mirror frames, as well as glass paintings.
I recently started chip carving, a process where two angular, intersecting, cuts are made into the wood taking out a ‘chip’. Far from being limited in its style, intricate patterns and designs can be carved in this way. One of my Clocks and the Serpent carving are good examples of this technique.
You can view a selection of my work in the Galleries pages and I am always open to taking commissions. I only exhibit at festivals, such as Glastonbury, The Big Green Gathering, and some local shows.
