This year I took part in the Maldon Art Trail, an exciting, free event showcasing
the work of more than 60 talented local artists, from photographers and painters
to stained-glass and textile artists – most of the work is for sale. The artwork
could be found in surprising places: in shop windows, on external walls, and even
in the medieval Moot Hall. Visitors are given a map to consult and to follow the
Trail
One of my pieces (top left) was auctioned at the Moot Hall in Maldon, along with
other artists pieces, to help raise funds for next year’s Maldon Art Trail.
A recent commission from Chelmsford Borough Council to carve a Totem Pole in the
One World Garden at Hylands Park has just been completed. They didn't want to lose
the tree (a pine) altogether and the decision was made to keep it as a point of interest
that would fit into the theme of the garden celebrating 100 yrs of scouting. It was
carved in situ where it stands. Hylands Park are planning a series of nature inspired
workshops using the totem as a point of reference to teach about the local wildlife
to be found in the area.
I have been found at the Big Green Gathering, near Cheddar Gorge, around August each
year (not this year, sadly). I am either on my own or with Tim and Sue Royan, makers
of some very beautiful Welsh Lovespoons. Look out for the large green ex-library
bus with Celtic decoration and the awning under which our work is laid out.
More of my work is already on show at various venues around the county, whether because
it was commissioned privately or for a public place.
There is a chainsaw carved dragon situated at Danbury Park. This piece was executed
in partnership with Paul Sharp, a fellow artist and sculptor. A cowled monk figure
is sited at Marks Hall Estate in the private gardens there. A full-sized jointed
figure sits in the Friary Gardens in Maldon. Visitors are welcome to move him into
various poses.
If you keep your eyes open you may come across my work in some of the oddest of places.
A phenomenon in the area around Southminster has seen strange things appearing that
bear a remarkable resemblance to my own style. Fallen logs and the odd gate post
or two have suddenly acquired faces.
It’s as though the local landscape is coming alive ..........
