This Totem Pole was commissioned by Chelmsford Borough Council for the One World
Garden at Hylands Park. Click each picture for a bigger version.
The One World Garden at Hylands Park has just been completed. They didn't want to
lose a pine tree altogether and the decision was made to keep it as a point of interest
that would fit into the theme of the garden celebrating 100 yrs of scouting.
The pole was carved in situ where it stands using scaffolding and involving lots
of running up and down the ladders.
Rather than being a direct copy of a Native American totem pole, i decided ‘tipping
a nod’ to the style and retaining something distinctly British about the feel was
going to be the best approach.
I was given a ‘wish list’ of animals, birds and insects that were to be included
in the design and added some of my own. All species on the pole can be found in the
local area.
Hylands Park are planning a series of nature inspired workshops using the totem pole
as a point of reference to teach about the local wildlife to be found in the area.
